These potato chips can thank NFL arenas for their existence

It seems that Frito-Lay pressed the Patriots mascot into service.

I would have liked to have been in the room when a marketing guru came up with the idea of digging up dirt from NFL arenas, mixing it in Texas fields, and growing potatoes to make limited edition bags of team-specific Lay’s potato chips. Because it’s a little brilliant.

Lay’s Golden Grounds chips go through a normal cultivation and chip manufacturing process, with the added gimmick of knowing that the potatoes in the bag touched the ground that your favorite players probably encountered. Can you taste the bricks and sweat? Unlikely. These chips are more about mystery than the terroir of NFL arenas.

Lay’s announced the chips earlier this week, saying that limited edition bags representing 29 teams will be available to fans through a Twitter raffle. It demands fans to create tweets using a series of hashtags. Complete rules are available at Lay’s Golden Grounds website.

But wait, you say, there are 32 teams in the NFL, so why only 29 different chips? Sorry, Browns, Bengals and Broncos fans: no dirt for you. I do not know why, but I have contacted Frito-Lay to ask.

A production video goes into some details about the creation process. You will be happy to know that dirt from rival teams was kept separate in the potato field. This means that Chicago Bears Soldier Field chips will not be contaminated with Green Bay Packers’ Lambeau Field soil.

Frito-Lay brought out the football legend Jerry Rice as spokesman for the chips. He described the San Francisco 49ers’ snacks as tasting like “three Super Bowl wins, 22,895 yards, 1,549 receptions, 208 touchdowns and 13 Pro Bowls.”

I guess the Chicago Bears chips would taste like the fading choruses Super Bowl Shuffle and the ghosts of Mike Ditka’s hot polish sausages. Delicious.
