American athletes on their way to the Winter Olympics next month in Beijing have reportedly been told leave their personal phones behind during security issues.
Team USA has encouraged Americans competing in the games to take burner phones instead to prevent potential surveillance, according to a Friday report from The Wall Street Journal.
Team USA and the International Olympic Committee did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The report comes after the Biden administration confirmed it in Decemberin Beijing and organized a diplomatic boycott of China’s human rights abuses.
“The Biden administration will not send any diplomatic or official representation to the Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games in 2022, given China’s ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity in Xinjiang and other human rights abuses,” the press secretary said. said Jen Psaki during a press conference in December. “The athletes in Team USA have our full support.”
The Winter Olympics start on February 4 and include seven new sports such as monobob – a bobsled competition for women only.
