While we always knew Final Fantasy VII Remake would span more than one game, this is the first official confirmation from Square Enix about how many entries will make up the ambitious project.

Part one of this trilogy was Final Fantasy VII Remake, first released in 2020. That remake, if you didn’t know, was a very good game, willing to make changes (!) to the original storyline of the beloved ‘90s JRPG. As for the next entry in this newly confirmed trilogy, that will be Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (which itself was just announced during the stream today) which is out next winter. That leaves a third, currently unnamed entry in the trilogy that will be released in the future.

No details on this final game were revealed during the 15-minute stream today.

“The team has come together and are currently working hard on [the remake project’s] development,” said Final Fantasy brand manager and executive producer Yoshinori Kitase during today’s event.

“Since the announcement of Final Fantasy VII Remake project, we have said that it would play out over multiple parts,” continued Kitase. “But I can now announce that the complete project will be a three-part series made up of Final Fantasy VII Remake, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and one final title.”

As for when to expect that “final title,” Kitase only said he hoped folks will stick around for the “exciting conclusion” of the trilogy “further down the line.”

The next chapter in the trilogy, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, will be released next winter on PS5. No Xbox or PC ports were announced today, but I expect they will come around…eventually.

Also announced today: the long-awaited and heavily rumored remake of the FF7 prequel spin-off Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. This new version is officially titled Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion and will be out this winter on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, and PC.
