CMS pushes forward deadline for vaccine mandate in 24 states

Healthcare workers in the 24 states recently covered by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services vaccination mandate against covid-19 will need to get their first shot by February 14 and the last shot by March 15, according to new guidance released by CMS Friday.

The Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that the CMS requirement that employees at Medicare and Medicaid-certified facilities be vaccinated against COVID-19 may enter into force in all 50 states pending appeals in lower courts. The mandate previously stayed in about half the country after states raised lawsuits against the policy.

Thursday’s decision does not affect the compliance date for suppliers in states where the mandate was already in force, says CMS. Employees in these 25 states, plus the District of Columbia and the Territories, must be fully vaccinated or exempt from the requirement by February 28th.
